Waterproofing
Waterproofing is the process of protecting your home from the elements of weather, moisture, and condensation. Moisture inside your home is bad and can quickly lead to structural damage, mould or rot. If you have part of your home below ground then waterproofing is a concern for you. Your basement needs to be protected from rain runoff that tries to penetrate through the cement walls of your home, also during winter when water expands when it freezes. Improper construction and protection of exterior walls is the cause of water leaking into a basement.
Keeping your basement dry by waterproofing it is important to limiting the amount of mould and mildew buildup. Because mould and mildew usually hide behind the walls, it is usually hard to spot, but can lead to severe health issues causing illness or allergies. If you have mould in your basement (especially black mould), it should be dealt with immediately, and the source of the problem needs to be addressed to prevent more harm to your home and family! The worst thing you can do with cracks in your foundation walls is to wait and see what happens. A heavy rainfall could leave puddles in your basement in the morning, or thousands of dollars in damage to furniture, carpet, toys, etc.
Over the years your house will settle into the soil creating stress on the foundation. This can create cracks in your home's cement walls. Minor cracks in the foundation walls can sometimes be repaired from the inside, but because of the immense amount of pressure that freezing water creates on the exterior walls of your home, this is usually only a temporary fix. To properly ensure a permanent barrier is protecting the foundation, cracks should be repaired and waterproofed along the outside walls as well.
If you have water moisture or mould in your basement, or signs of loose mortar or broken block, then waterproofing is likely required. Properly sealed exterior walls will have parging, sealing, and drainage membranes, and gravel fill to protect the walls from moisture.
