UNDERPINNING 

  "Underpinning" is the process of strengthening and stabilizing the foundation to support a new basement floor. Underpinning may be necessary for variety of reasons: 

• The original foundation may simply not be strong enough
• The usage of the house or building has changed
• The properties of the soil supporting the foundation may have changed
• The basement needs to be lowered below the original footing

Underpinning is accomplished by extending the foundation in depth or in breadth so it either rests on a stronger soil stratum or distributes its load across a greater area.
